Tobe Hooper kickstarted a remarkable slasher/horror franchise in 1974, with the release of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Crafted on a low budget, the film went on to become a raging success, giving rise to several sequels, prequels, and reboots. The film has portrayed gruesome imageries of killings and butcherings, undertaken by the terrifying cannibal family where the iconic antagonist Leatherface hails from. Today, this franchise is considered to be a pinnacle of the slasher-horror genre and has amassed a loyal fanbase that has been anticipating a new release since the last movie came out in 2017.
The franchise has a total of eight movies, revolving around the murderous acts of the chainsaw-wielding cannibal Leatherface. He happens to be one of the most popular antagonists in horror, with the chainsaw as his brand and his face mask made of human skin as a grotesque element that makes him all the more brutal. A member of a cannibalistic family where homicidal killing is revered more than being a doctor or a CEO, the movies have Leatherface slaughtering the cast, impaling them with meat hooks, and smashing them with sledgehammers while his family supports his each and every move.
Originally hailing from the Sawyer family of killers, reboots have changed Leatherface’s origins, making him belong to the Hewitt family. But, since 2013, the franchise has returned to its home turf, depicting the notorious legacy of the Sawyers.
