There r numerous reasons why a person should witness this holy shrine atleast once in their lifetime

1. Open to all- the design of the harmandir sahib is important. There are four doors which mark four entrance to the temple. This symbolises the sikh belief in equality and their view that all people are welcome into their holy place

2. Ishnaan in holy water- the building is surrounded by a large rectangular lake. It was this pool of amrit (holy water) which gave the city of Amritsar it's name. It is believed that taking bath in this pool Or even drinking it can help you repent for sins.

3.Explore history and heritage - Guru arjan, the fifth guru designed the original gurdwara (in 1604). This was destroyed during the eighteenth century. In the early 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh had the harmandir Sahib rebuilt and covered the upper part of the building with gold. This is why it is referred to as the golden Temple. It was again attacked in 1984 by Indian govt. During operation 'BlueStar' and then renovated again. The harmandir sahib is significant because it housed the Sikhs' holy book, the Adi Granth, when it was completed in 1604. A copy of this volume, the Guru Granth sahib, now rests on a throne beneath a velvet canopy decorated with silver and gold thread. The holy book is read out continuously, with each complete reading of the entire Adi Granth taking 48 hours.

4.Free Langar - the visit also includes langar, the free vegetarian meal that is available for all. About 100,000 meals are served every day. About 30,000,000 pilgrims/tourists visit Amritsar every year.

5. Meaning of sewa - one who performs selfless service. Without thought of reward, shall attain his Lord Master.
