‘Where are you really from?’ A microaggression routinely used by ethnic minorities themselves

It is often asserted to be a white microaggression against black people; when somebody says he is from Birmingham, asking where he is ‘really’ from. The implication being that it is not enough to be born in a country to make one a genuine member of that nationality. There is more to this though than at first meets the eye.
