Due to the increase in smog in Lahore, the High Court has hinted at imposing an environmental lockdown for a week.
The lockdown could force schools, offices and private institutions in the city to close for a week, while the PDMA chief asked for a respite until Sunday to control smog.
Justice Shahid Karim of Lahore High Court heard the case against non-control of smog. Mayor Lahore Colonel Retired Major Mubashir, Deputy Director Environment, representatives of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Environment Commission appeared. Chairman Environment Commission Justice (retd) Ali Akbar Qureshi submitted a report in the court for smog removal.
Justice Shahid Karim said that it remains to be seen whether the graph of smog has come down or not. The PDMA official said that steps are being taken to control the smoke. On Monday, the index came close to 400. The index will drop significantly this week.
Justice Shahid Karim said that how will the smog index come down, the index is running up to 200 in the entire region.
The PDMA official said that the main reason for the index reaching 200 is local traffic. Justice Shahid Karim said that if this situation continues then we will have to impose environmental lockdown for one week, we will have to close private offices and schools for one week, but you are saying that the situation will improve by Sunday. If you travel by rail you will find out how much pollution is being spread.
The court adjourned the hearing seeking an implementation report next week.
