Florence, 26 September 2021 - In the intense wave of bad weather that hit Tuscany on the afternoon of Sunday 26 September, hail also appeared. And as happened on other occasions in Italy during this period, the grains were particularly large. Several car windshields paid for it in Tuscany. In a video on the web you can see a small car with shattered glass. Around the middle, hundreds of hailstones the size of golf balls. They are responsible for damage to cars.
But why are such large grains formed? Everything happens inside the cloud that forms and contains the grains. The more powerful the warm winds that support the grains, the more they will be able to swell inside the cloud. Therefore, the stronger the currents, the more the "crazy" grains turn inside the cloud and grow larger. Warm winds are real updrafts, which are all the more powerful the warmer the lower layers of the atmosphere are. The result is real bullets which in various situations have been particularly dangerous.
