WA Police with the assistance of SES personnel, drones and aircraft, continue to search for missing 4-year-old Cleo SMITH who was last seen around 1.30am on Saturday 16 October 2021 in a tent at the Blowholes campsite in Macleod (50km north of Carnarvon).
Cleo Smith lived with her family in Carnarvon, Western Australia before her disappearance. At approximately 6:30pm on Friday 15 October 2021, Cleo arrived with her mother Ellie Smith, step-father Jake Gliddon, and sister Isla, at the Blowholes campsite in Macleod, Western Australia for a weekend visit. In an interview after Cleo's disappearance, Ellie Smith said that Cleo had gone to bed in the family's tent at around 8pm, but woke up early the next morning at 1:30am asking for water, and that after Ellie had given Cleo some water, she returned to sleep. When the family woke up at 6am on Saturday 16 October, they discovered both Cleo and her sleeping bag missing, with Ellie stating that "the tent was completely open. It was about 30 centimeters from open" when she awoke. Police have made one thing extremely clear - Cleo’s parents are not in any way targets of the investigation. Cleo’s stepdad Jake Gliddon let officers into the home on Tuesday. He spent a short amount of time inside with them before handing over the keys and driving away. “The parents have been nothing but helpful,” Acting WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch told 6PR. “We’ve worked very closely with them, they’ve let us into their home, they’ve let us into their cars, their phones, everything. That is a normal part of an investigation." On 20 October, acting deputy police commissioner Daryl Gaunt insisted that claims that the case was being treated as an abduction were "not correct", explaining that "we're treating it as a search and rescue mission, first and foremost. And that remains our mission — to find Cleo". Inspector Jon Munday revealed on the same day that the zip on Cleo's tent was open wider than she could have reached, saying "the positioning of that zipper for the flap is one of the circumstances that has caused us to have grave concerns for Cleo's safety". It was announced on 21 October that the police now believed that Cleo had been abducted, with the Premier of Western Australia Mark McGowan announcing a $1 million reward for anyone with information on her disappearance. While, as of 23 October, police have not ruled out the possibility that Cleo could have been taken to another state of Australia, police commissioner Chris Dawson noted the state's "very strict border controls" put in place due to the pandemic would make undetected travel outside of Western Australia difficult.
