Following the pathetic showing of California Republicans in the recall election this week, Republican strategists are again sounding the alarm bells about Donald Trump's "big lie" about election fraud. These strategists believe that Trump's insistence that the 2020 election was stolen (it wasn't) and that there is widespread fraud (there isn't) is keeping Republicans away from the polls, just like it did in Georgia earlier this year. Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

After Gavin Newsome democratic governor of California survived his recall election this week, mostly due to the fact that you had an absurdly high number of mail in ballots coming from Democrats, Republican strategists. Once again sounded the alarm bells that they actually sound that a couple of weeks ago about Donald Trump potentially already costing the GOP, the 2022 midterms. Now, even though we're still months away from even being in 2022, we're over a year away from those midterm elections, these strategists are telling us, well, basically the same thing they told us a month or two ago, which was the same thing. They told us all the way back in January. And that is as long as Trump is out there, pushing lies to the public about how you can't trust mail-in ballots. The whole system's unreliable. There's nothing but fraud. What he's actually doing is suppressing Republican voters.
Democrats typically have no problem with mail-in ballots. You fill out your thing, you put it in the mailbox, you stick the little flag up and you go about your day. You're done. You voted, you move on. Republicans on the other hand have been told for near a year. Now, even long before the 2020 election that you simply can't trust it. Oh no, no, no, no, no folks, you don't know what's going to happen on that ballot. You don't know if it's going to be counted. So instead you need to show up and vote in person, which isn't always possible. Especially day of something could happen. You know, you could forget it's election day. Not that that's likely you could end up in a car accident. You could have a family emergency, you could get called into work. When you weren't supposed to be, you could be stressed.
You could be sick. You could do whatever that prevents you from going to the pole that particular day. And if you miss it, you miss it. And that's actually what these Republican strategists are warning about here. If you're not going to take advantage of the systems in place, and we do have plenty of states that have expanded vote by mail since the 2020 election and Republicans are now worried that they're going to miss out on those states, that they could possibly lose swing states like Pennsylvania for good, because Republicans have had it beaten into their brains for the last 12 months by Trump and his followers that you can't trust the mail-in system. At that point, you have to leave everything to chance. You have to hope nothing bad happens on election day. You have to hope there's not bad weather that day because that also suppresses votes folks, everything you could possibly imagine, suppresses votes has an effect on voter turnout, a sunny day versus a cloudy day, a rainy day versus a cloudy day, a windy day, an exceptionally cold day and exceptionally hot day.
Again, illnesses, work accidents, family emergencies, whatever it is. If it happens on election day, it changes the way people vote or if they vote at all. And Republicans do understand that the problem is they created a beast. You created the monster that is going out there, spreading misinformation, spreading his lies, trying to convince people that the only way you can be sure that your vote is working is if you show up to the poll on election day, Democrats are moving forward. Democrats are modernizing. Democrats are making the system easier for their voters and their voters. As we saw in the Georgia special election, as we saw in California this week, they're taking advantage of those systems. Republicans are not, and that is what is terrifying these strategists, because they think at this point, Trump may have already cost them the 2022 midterms.
