U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas spoke with reporters Thursday in Brownsville, Texas, after meeting with Border Patrol staff near the South Texas border.
Mayorkas' visit came after local leaders asked the Biden administration to visit the Rio Grande Valley to see firsthand the increase in migrants.
He received operational updates, engaged with the DHS front-line workforce and met with local officials and community leaders.
Mayorkas acknowledged an increase in illegal border crossings, saying "The situation at the border is one of the toughest challenges we face."
"It is complicated, changing and involves vulnerable people at a time of a global pandemic," he said.
Mayorkas said the challenges are more difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
