In The Longing you take on the role of a Shade, told to keep watch of a sleeping King for 400 days until he awakens. 400 days counting down in real-time.
What you do is upto you (me). Alone, do you explore the hollow caverns? Simply wait till it is time to awaken the King? Build a home for yourself? Search for a way out of your imposed exile? Or do you try to understand it all? The Longing is a game about loneliness, escapism and the eternal search for purpose.
