Singapore, US affirm 'vital' American presence in region as defence chiefs meet

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said he is committed to a constructive and stable relationship with China. The retired four-star general -- the first member of Joe Biden's cabinet to visit the region -- is in Singapore from Monday to Wednesday. Mr Austin met Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and has called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Southeast Asia has emerged as a key arena as the US and China tussle for influence. Mr Austin will visit Vietnam and the Philippines next.
